When Jacob Met Jess

Every so often we—possibly more than you might think—we receive lovely emails from equally lovely guests who found their person at an It’s a Date event.

Well, set yourself to stun because this one’s a corker (as in, champagne-popping celebratory corker).

We couldn’t be happier to share the story below from Jessica, who earlier this month told us about her amazing experience at our board game speed dating night in London—and how it became the first chapter in her very own success story with Jacob.

6 months ago today, on 7th April, on my very first tentative foray into dating in about 15 years, I attended one of your It’s a Date board game speed dating evenings, at Draughts, Waterloo. I had low expectations and was just dipping my toe in the water to see what it was like, in a safe and fun environment.

Well, as well as having a fun and enjoyable evening, I happened to immediately meet someone who I instantly clicked with, Jacob, and later that evening on my way home you helped me to access my dashboard so I could match with him. He also sent me a match request and we got talking over the next couple of days. We had our first proper date a week after the speed dating, quickly fell in love, and went from strength to strength from there. It was like meeting someone i’d actually known for years.

We have been together and massively in love ever since, have met each other’s families, already been through some dramatic situations together, and could not be happier. In fact, he’s going to move in with me at the end of November.

So this is just an e-mail to say THANK YOU for creating the board games speed dating, it is BRILLIANT. I’ve spoken to so many single friends who live outside of London in other cities (Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol) and who wish there was the same sort of thing near them – any chance of you expanding your operations?

A huge THANK YOU to you both, Jess and Jacob, for allowing us to share your story with others. As our fabulous host Autumn said after reading this—we love love. We really do. Your story will no doubt give anyone considering a singles event the nudge they need to try something new and book a dating experience with us.

Here are three top tips we’ve taken from Jess’s experience:

Tip 1: Go in with an open mind

Don’t overthink it—treat the event as a fun night out rather than a high-stakes date. The best connections often happen when you’re relaxed and just being yourself.

Tip 2: Choose an experience that suits your style

Whether it’s an ice-breaker like games-themed speed dating or something more casual like a singles party, choose an event that matches your comfort zone. It makes the whole experience feel effortless and natural.

Tip 3: Make the most of your matches

Follow up while the spark is fresh! Don’t be shy about sending a match request or message soon after the event—sometimes that one click can change everything.
